I still haven't managed to post about my trip to the US because I'm too slack to find somewhere to host photos and I was somewhat embarassed to post anything anyway after such a long delay, but I need to post now anyway to promote:

Something In The Water (abridged)

My brother's documentary about the Perth music scene was picked up by JJJ TV and screens tonight...

I have meant to post for ages to mention that I don't (didn't) have global roaming set up for my phone for my trip to America, so if I've not replied to any messages or phone calls you've directed my way, I apologise.

This post is rendered somewhat pointless however by the fact that I'll be flying out of the US tomorrow morning and back in the country early Tuesday :( It's been an absolute blast out here, and it kills me to think that I'm going to have to wait until Xmas to see my baby

[ music | Ersatzteil - Fiendflug ]

I'm shall be removed from circulation for the next month or so, as I'm off to the US for three weeks, then back for a day, then off for a uni field trip for another week - so if I don't answer SMS messages I'm not ignoring you, you've just probably woken me up in the middle of the night with my phone beeping at me and I'm chosing not to answer in case I say something I later regret! ;) I'll still be keeping up with lj and hotmail should anyone have a pressing need to communicate with me, although I can't imagine why you would.

I made a trip to Sin to try and say au revoir to people, but nobody was there, so this will have to do.

See everyone end of Feb/beginning of March... Now to finish packing!

An object lesson in making sure you have your information correct [19 Nov 2008|06:34am]
[ mood | Pre-exam nerves ]
[ music | Me reciting the definitive mineral assemblages for various metamorphic grades ]

So, approaching my last exam, exhausted and sick of studying, I decide to figure out how I have to go in my exam to pass the unit. It's made up of two modules - structural and metamorphic geology - with progressive assessment of 60% and an exam worth 40%. You have to pass both modules to pass the unit. My progressive assessment marks are about 80% in each module, so to pass the unit I have to pretty much turn up to the exam and write my name on the piece of paper, so I can relax with the studying (which I do), right?

Wrong!

It turns out that you don't have to pass each module, you have to pass each form of assessment, ie the progressive and the exam! I could get 49% in this exam, which gives me an aggregate mark near a Distinction and still fail the damn unit!! Not the thing to find out the day before the exam... Fortunately I wanted a little more than just a pass so I had done some study and, if there's one thing I'm good at it's last minute cramming for exams and the ability to string disjointed bits of information together into coherent sentences. OK, that's two things, but you'll notice that neither of them are the ability to count...

I just wish this was an afternoon exam so I could go to the lab to study beforehand and make myself feel better by realising that other people know only as much as I do, and then scaring the shit out of them by being able to map out the metamorphic facies according to actual temperatures and pressures instead of some schematic scribble and claiming he said we needed to know it for the exam. (Actually, last time I did that and memorised an equation that we wouldn't have to know it turned out to be a question in the exam worth about 10%!)

[ music | We Have To See, We Have To Know - Velvet Acid Christ ]

It would seem that I have tonsi (or to look at it from the other direction - litis). My guess is, having never had tonsilitis before, that my body is just taking it out on a test drive, seeing how it feels with just the one inflamed - perhaps if all goes well, we'll go for the full disease later. Who can be sure of what luxuries we have to without in these uncertain economic times?

Exams loom up ahead, but it shouldn't be too bad - once I get this assignment done that's due at the end of study week: a critical analysis of the 524 page Aust. govt green paper on the proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme. That's due next Friday, and then the following day I have two exams on the same day! Fortunately one of them I only need to turn up to and write my name on the paper to pass, so that removes some of the stress - as long as I'm not up all night the night before trying to finish my assignment, which is incredibly likely at this point.

I would mention that I hope that my 'tonsi' doesn't become full-blown but I don't think I have anything to worry about there - tonsilitis just doesn't seem weird enough an illness for me to get...

[ music | Butterfly Dance - Diary of Dreams ]

Days late, but I though I might weigh in with my thoughts on the Destroid/Diary of Dreams/Covenant extravaganza.

I was DJ'ing the evening, so arrived to a madhouse of stress as people rushed around trying to organise all the last-minute stuff. Next time I'm going to arrive later after everyone kept asking me stuff and then yelling at me when I had no idea what they were talking about, and then yelling at me more when I asked if we were going to sort the lights out at any point. It says so much about the talent and dedication of everyone involved that the night ran so smoothly given that Diary of Dreams were finishing their sound check three minutes before the doors opened and we only had some red lights on the dancefloor for the first 10 minutes of the night.

On to the bands: )

As [info]tiberius_n mentioned in his post, we outsold the eastern states, and all the bands said that we were the best crowd, best venue, best vibe... as always! What he doesn't say is that he plays a huge part in all of that, and if it wasn't for him we'd just be bitching about how none of the bands make the trip over west or lamenting our empty wallets for all the trips to Melbourne to see concerts. Much, much kudos to you Nathan - take a bow!!

Stuff from the news... [03 Oct 2008|05:52pm]
[ mood | procrastinating ]
[ music | O Brother Sleep - Diary of Dreams ]

So, annoyed that you don't get to play the latest installment of the Silent Hill series?

Turns out it's all the fault of this man:

As we all know, despite the average age for computer/console gamers being around 28 these days, Australia's classification system is screwy because it doesn't have an R18+ rating for games. Seems that when the last review of legislation went through no-one could imagine adult gamers so it got missed. To add the rating now requires the agreement of all state Attorneys-General before it can be legislated federally. All the A-Gs agree, except for South Australia'a Michael Atkinson. Apparently he has a philosophical opposition to anything that might earn an R18+ rating, so it's not going to change anytime soon.

Still, you can tell he's a dick just by looking at the braces he's wearing in that photo...

[ music | Down in Hell (Satanischer) - Alien Vampires ]

Blergh... It's really too late to be doing geological cross sections, but it needs to be done and even if I go to bed now I'm only going to get 2.5 hours sleep, so why bother?

Apparently I haven't posted here in about 10 weeks so I guess I have some filling in to do...

Just some blathering, nothing to see here... Move along.... )

Finally, VNV... Well, nothing to say that others haven't I guess. Pure brilliance! Hopefully people can understand why I was such a giddy fan-boy after the show in Melbourne last tour. I was willing to put money in to bring them out just so that people could experience what a VNV concert is, but I didn't have to - much, much kudos to [info]tiberius_n for organising a great show. And even more thanks his way for the invite out to dinner with the band this evening. I wasn't sure that I was interested because I have so much work to do, and despite loving the music I was never that interested in the people behind it. It turns out that Ronan is one of the coolest people I've ever met, completely separate from VNV (although admittedly VNV is responsible for his having travelled the world quite so widely...) I didn't think it would be possible to be more of a fan-boy, but I was proven wrong!! I just hope I didn't seem like a fawning idiot in front of them!! Perhaps I can tell [info]aegis_nullis that someone stole his set-list and keep it for myself... Damn, I shouldn't have said that - now it's going to be a lot harder to get away with!

[ music | 100% (110% remix by Combichrist) - Angelspit ]

OK, now I'm righteously pissed....

However long ago (maybe even 10 years) I signed up for HBF health insurance. As part of it I wanted full dental coverage and believed I communicated that fact. It would seem that they enrolled me for, and have been charging me for general dental and not major dental. I got to find this out today when I presented my dental bills for $3,000 and was told that 90% wasn't covered and was handed back all of $171.20 instead of $1,900. And because I was only paying for general dental, there's nothing I can do about it. And because I signed up so long ago I'm paying a cheap rate and to vary my cover now would pretty much double my premium. Fuck you HBF, fuck you very much...

[ music | Fansong - Dethklok ]

Sin was OK - although when you have the flu it's generally not a good idea to wander out from behind the curtain into all that smoke. Once I got home I realised just how raspy I was, so I'm guessing it may have made conversation difficult through the night and explains why people kept asking me to repeat myself.

Evac still hasn't let anyone know of his intentions regarding DJ'ing and the next roster is being done up this week so I told Boxer to go ahead and include me, so I guess I'm not quitting just yet. Given Boxer's imminent departure to the jealousy-inducing festival season in Europe I guess there's room for Eva and I for a couple more months.

Sin itself can be summed up pretty easily:
First song played - Go Forth and Die - Dethklok
Last song played - Thunderhorse - Dethklok
Everything else - just killing time between those two songs!

Nonetheless I will be DJ'ing tomorrow night at Sin. I appreciate that people look back at the last time that I was on with some displeasure, but Snog wasn't my fault, OK?

Advice needed... [13 May 2008|07:11pm]
[ music | Sentimental Scar - Iris ]

So I'm finally getting off my butt and getting a landline at home and a connection to this new-fangled thing called the internet.

Basically I'm looking for a reasonable value provider that won't dick me around and a plan that will work reasonably well with the idea of a computer being left on for days at a time sucking tv shows down from the web. I haven't organised my landline yet so conceivably they can be bundled together, although my mobile can't. Also I'm lucky enough that I can afford to spend a little bit more to make sure that I get better value or a higher download limit, etc - that said, however, it's not like price is not a consideration.

Thanks in advance, now I turn the floor over to you....

Warning: This microwave meal contains gravy that will, due to various processes at this stage only poorly understood by science, heat up to hotter than the sun. We've also stuck the lid of the container down with the strongest adhesive that we can find, and this will only yield it's vise-like grip in an instant and with a violent jerk that sends the aforementioned gravy all over your hand. Burning yourself is inevitable. Get used to it.

That's what it should say, but it doesn't....

[ music | In Front of Me - Infected Mushroom ]

Two days in, not yet given any major assignments, and I'm already reminded of just how much time working and studying together manage to eat up. Still, it's nice to be doing some third year units again where you deal with the finer details and what they mean, instead of all those broad generalisatons. Still haven't sorted out the problem with the unit that clashes with all my other units; I went to the first lecture of the unit I want to do instead and spoke with the lecturer who flat out said that she wouldn't let me into her class! Apparently 2/3 of the unit is the equivalent of first year geology, and whilst I wouldn't mind the easy marks, she's not happy to let geologists come along and play. So I have to find something else to do or see if I can manage to do a unit by only attending virtual (recorded) lectures. (No need for [info]andaluza or anyone else to make comments about my previous time at uni not involving me going to any lectures then either!!)

Mushroom were quite good, and if they were to be remembered in isolation from the day I was having, probably brilliant. Unfortuantely I was in the middle of one the most irritating days I've ever had - nothing major, just a million, billion little things that had a cumulative effect, only one of which had anything to do with IM directly (some dick next to me at the front who wouldn't shut up - I thought he was a uni friend of [info]ruavel's so I bit my tongue, only to find out at the end that he was just a dick after all!)

[ music | Verdict - Diary of Dreams ]

Well, I think Sin last night went pretty well, even if I do say so myself. Evac and I had the dancefloor going from about 10:45 and kept it pretty busy until we closed up at 03:30. Rven a couple of tracks where we chanced out arms seemed to come off. I meant to post the set-lists but I forgot to bring them with me, so I'll post 'em tomorrow for anyone interested.

In other news I realised than next Monday is first day back at uni and is one of my busier days, which pretty much ensures that I shan't be heading to Future Music and Infected Mushroom will have to be 'un-enhanced' if I'm to have any chance of functioning in a reasonable manner to make even a passable first impression on my lecturers, let alone the possibility that I'll have a three hour lab on my first day... :(
